We subscribe to the formula of Pleasure + engagement + meaning = happiness. For more on this formula visit our learning lens at http://www.squidoo.com/RecipeforHappiness/ .
For one to find pleasure they must become interested in an activity. This often does not happen naturally but because we take the time and trouble of paying attention. To control attention means to control experience. We are only conscious of information which we attend to. Attention acts as a filter between external events and our experience of them.
In his book "Finding Flow", Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi provides the example of how one has to pay attention in order to experience the simple pleasures of parenting. To know what the child is "proud of" and "into" one has to devote more attention to share those activities. "Only when there is harmony between the goals of the participants, when everyone is investing psychic energy into a joint goal, does being together become enjoyable. The same holds true for any other type of relationship. "For instance, when there is reason to think that we are appreciated, job satisfaction is usually high".

"Only engaged associates can keep customers engaged and only engaged customers can keep associates engaged"
