Distinction: Leadership as a process Vs. Leadership as a relationship
Definitions Leadership as a process - What you do that others follow Leadership as a relationship - What you are to those who follow
Comparisons What you do that organizes and directs people vs. The dynamics of how those people work together with you Knowing what to do and how to do it in order to get people to join you in it vs. Being attractive, but not merely charismatic in getting people to join you in it
Example: Vince Lombardi was one kind of leader and Rick Pitino another. Vince developed his players by intimidation which is a process, whereas, Rick's players played their hearts out for him, because they knew he love them and had confidence in them.
Key Point: Either of these can provide outstanding leadership. Largely the appeal for one or the other depends on the followers. Different people are drawn to different methods.
Benefit: Where leadership is a relationship, you often have higher morale and cooperation. When leadership is a process, you often get compliance and great effort, even excellence. The kind of business you are in often determines which style works best.
