Pure Physics
- creating a siphon. To start the water flowing, you must first "prime" the pump. Put something in before you can get anything out. Otherwise, you are just pumping air.
It takes a little more effort initially to begin the flow of water. Once the water is flowing it only takes a gentle hand on the pump handle to keep the water flowing.
If the flow stops, within a short time you can regain it by simply pumping with the handle again. First a little more vigorously and then easing up after you have re-established the siphon.
If you allow the flow to remain interrupted for a longer period of time then the water recedes back into the well and you must start over and re-prime the pump and re-invest the initial effort to get the flow going again.
Think of the customer focus practice much like the hand pump because human actions follow much the same laws of physics. Agree or disagree?
1. Bodies in motion stay in motion, while bodies at rest stay at rest.
2. Humans tend to be like water in that, unless properly channeled, we tend to take the path of least resistance.
To begin the practice, we must put something in by demonstrating our intentions to customers and team members by getting feedback and asking "How are we doing?". Just do it! It's more important to be sincere than perfect. You get better as you go both in terms of the feedback itself and what you do with it.
It takes a little more effort at first in using the six steps to initiate the practice.
Once the flow begins it only takes a gentle hand on the handle to monitor and keep the flow going. Think of the 'practice cycle' as the cycle of the pump handle, with the "Thanking Customers" being the point of re-initiating the cycle where the handle is at the top and beginning its downward motion.
If the flow is interrupted or stops you can timely place just a little effort into starting the cycle and checking the feedback to maintain the characteristics needed.
Should the flow remain interrupted too long, then you must re-initiate the cycle using the six steps once again.
The characteristics of the feedback itself represent the physics of the siphon, in that they encourage bodies to stay in motion and not flow only to the path of least resistance (the well). The flow of the water from the pump represents the power of relationship building through customer focus and teamwork, where 1+1= more than 2!
